Two Trees Alpacas: Alpaca Yarn Products

Anyone who has ever knit with alpaca yarn before knows that it is a pleasure to use. I’ve always loved the way alpaca yarn handles, and I know you will too. Alpaca yarn generally runs $8-$10 an ounce. Yarn produced by mills will have a slightly different appearance, as will those that have been hand-spun. When you hear the term "firsts" or "prime", we are referring to fiber that comes from the blanket of the alpaca. The blanket is the middle section (belly, back, and sides) of the alpaca. It is the more valuable fiber; finer and softer. This fiber can be worn next to the skin by most people, even those who are bothered by wool, due to the fact that alpaca fleece has very few guard hairs. "Seconds" are the fleece that comes from the neck and legs of the alpaca. This fiber tends to be a bit coarser. However, blending it with other fibers can soften it up greatly and produce lovely yarn. Unless otherwise noted, all yarn is processed and spun using no dyes.
